CSIS Panel: "Fifteen Years of Doing Business: Opportunities for Future Directions"

Dr. Juan Jose Daboub was invited to the panel, "Fifteen Years of Doing Business: Opportunities for Future Directions” at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. to discuss the future of the Doing Business Index. This year marks the fifteen-year anniversary of the Doing Business Index, which is a program that looks at various countries' economies and ranks them on their ease of starting and continuing a formal business.

Since its inception, the Doing Business Indicators have been under scrutiny with various adjustments made to them over the past few years. On Thursday, February 22, 2018, CSIS held a panel to discuss the accomplishments, controversies, and future of the Doing Business Indicators.

In the panel, Dr. Daboub talked about how the indicators were one of many resources that helped him when he was the Minister of Finance of El Salvador.

Op-Ed: "Una referencia que elimina barreras" by Dr. Juan Jose Daboub & Daniele E. Runde

It’s been fifteen years since the launch of the Doing Business Indicators, which is a program provided by The World Bank that measures the number of steps, regulations, and costs related to the opening, running and closing of a "formal" company. Dr. Juan Jose Daboub, Former Minister of Finance of El Salvador and Former Managing Director at the World Bank Group; and Daniele E. Runde, Project Director of Prosperity and Development at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) recapped the benefits that the program has provided over the years, in an article in ABC, one of Spain's leading national newspapers.

In the article, Dr. Daboub talked about his past work as the Minister of Finance of El Salvador and how Doing Business helped guide the Government’s plan. “We achieved a more competitive private sector even in those countries more advanced than ours,” he wrote.

Furthermore, he discusses the value of Doing Business as a tool of economic impact, addresses its history of controversy, it’s value to job creation, as a public good and more.

“Doing Business has played a positive role for small, medium and large entrepreneurs to do business formally and generate employment around the world.”

AEI: Economic growth–The only path to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals?

From the American Enterprise Institute:

"Last month, the United Nations unanimously adopted an ambitious new global development agenda to end poverty by 2030 and pursue a sustainable future. Yet previous top-down development strategies have not driven the economic growth necessary to bring countries out of poverty and are sustainable only through donor funding. Can a development policy that empowers individuals and expands economic opportunity help the UN achieve its Sustainable Development Goals?

Dr. Juan José Daboub participated as a panelist in the 9:20 a.m. session, "The case for economic opportunity and the SDGs." See the agenda below for more information.
